Digestion
Our digestion can become disturbed for a variety of reasons. The food we eat, the efficiency of our digestive systems and the impact of seemingly unrelated things like the weather or our emotions (especially anger, stress and fatigue) can all play a role in how well our food is digested.
According to classical Chinese Traditional Medicine theory, food is categorised by the way it affects qi in our bodies – whether it makes the qi rise or fall, collect in the centre of the body or push out towards the extremities. Each food type – sweet, sour, bitter, salty or pungent – falls under the influence of an organ and certain foods can be eaten to strengthen those parts of the body that are weak. For example, the Stomach and Spleen like warm food and regular eating patterns. They thrive on food with a relatively bland or sweet taste.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestion is governed by the Stomach and Spleen. These two organs are important for the production of energy in the body and also for maintaining our centre in a world that is constantly changing around us. The Stomach and Spleen also have a close relationship to conditions of anxiety.
Digestion involves a number of organ-networks in the body, and can become deregulated when any of them are out of balance. Acupuncture can help with the regulation of:
- Acid reflux/heartburn
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Bloating
- Indigestion
- General abdominal discomfort
We do work with weight loss protocols but these protocols aim to improve metabolism in general. Any weight loss will come from a combination of acupuncture with strict attention to exercise and diet (under the guidance of a nutritionist, if the weight condition is long-standing).
